Audi engineers were recently spied cold-weather testing the upcoming second generation TT. Largely undisguised, the cars featured plenty of styling cues from the recent Shooting Brake design study.

These photographs provide the best images so far of the coupe and roadster versions of the TT, providing a good indication of Audi’s latest design direction and a subtle evolution of the original iconic TT shape.

Whether or not Audi builds a more squared off Shooting Brake version of the TT remains to be seen at this time. Some rumors suggest they will, though we’ve been unable to confirm such a car as of yet.

This new TT is slightly larger than the outgoing model, allowing for the rear seats of the coupe to be more usable than the smaller partial seating of its predecessor. The additional size will help the car square off against the also-larger BMW Z4 roadster and coupe, details of which were also released today.

Sources point to a September launch in Paris with the coupe going on sale shortly after that.

Like the A3, the TT is based on the Volkswagen AG corporate A chassis with transverse engine layout and Haldex all-wheel drive system where equipped. This means engines such as the 2.0T and 3.2 V6 from the A3 as well as rumored additional powerplants like the expected higher-powered 2.0T and 3.6 FSI. This also means the company’s 6-speed DSG should also be available in the TT.

Will Audi finally build a TTS, dusting off the badge originally retired as an NSU and briefly teased in front of enthusiasts with the 1995 Audi TTS design study? Some rumors in the industry suggest it could happen, especially as BMW has shown an M version of the Z4. If so, a potent 300+hp 3.6 FSI-powered V6 might be just what the doctor ordered.
